Meet Janet Schooler, John Hay Elementary's fabulous librarian. All of the kids at Hay love her...as have all our students for the 30 YEARS she's been making our library the place to be. Thank you for being part of our Teacher Feature, Ms. Schooler!
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Havana, Cuba. Left fairly soon after that and lived in Mississippi, Australia, Louisiana, and Colombia.
Why did you choose to become a teacher/librarian?
I have always enjoyed working with children and love to read so …. the perfect job for me.
What's the best thing about working at John Hay?
John Hay is like a family. We help each other grow and succeed, we take care of each other and we have fun together.
What's your favorite sport, food, and movie?
Sport: I love watching the Mariners. (Someday I will get to Spring Training.)
Movie: “Singing in the Rain” and “Charade”
Food: Strawberry Shortcake
What is your favorite children's book?
Impossible to have just one favorite! Currently, they are Best Man by Richard Peck (middle grade fiction), The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig (picture Book) and Bomb: the Race to Build and Steal the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin (non-fiction).
If you could speak to yourself at age 9, what piece of advice would you give?
Take more risks. It’s okay if it’s not perfect.
Thank you so much, Ms. Schooler! We are so grateful for all you do, and have done, for Hay!
